I grew up enjoying sumptuous food dishes prepared by my Grandmothers and my Mother. When they say, "You can never replicate the taste of dishes made by your mother or grandmother" it is absolutely true.
Below is the recipe made by my Nani (maternal grandmother). We used to wait for the day she decided to make these and then keep hovering around the kitchen for the first bite :)
As I share this recipe with you.
I am sharing a piece of my happy childhood memories. So enjoy and be happy while spreading happiness and the wonderful aroma all around.
They are full of fiber and protein with the added benefit of curry leaves.
Nani-Ma's Masala Dal Vada

1 cup Arhar/Toor Dal
1/2 cup chopped curry leaves
1 cup chopped Onions
1/4 cup chopped cilantro leaves/coriander leaves
4 finely diced green chillies (optional)
1 tsp coriander powder
salt to taste
a pinch of aesofotida or hing

Soak the Chana dal and Arhar dal, separately, overnight.
Drain and grind coarsely, separately. Avoid adding any water. If absolutely needed add 1-2 tsp of water.
Mix together and add the onions, curry leaves, chillies (optional), coriander leaves and all spices.
Heat oil in a kadhai.
Now shape the vadas and drop them in the hot oil one by one.
Fry at Low to medium flame till golden brown.
Drain on a paper towel.
Serve with a chutney or have it as it is. It tastes awesome either way :)
